Chilliwack Crime Update 2024

Chilliwack had Canada's highest crime rate and Crime Severity Index in 2024. Despite this, the crime rate dropped 4% and the CSI dropped 11% from 2023. The city is implementing public safety plans.

Chilliwack, British Columbia, has recently been the focus of public attention regarding its crime statistics. According to 2024 data from Statistics Canada, the city recorded the highest crime rate and Crime Severity Index (CSI) among all census metropolitan areas in the country.

Despite this notable ranking, a closer look at the numbers reveals a positive trend. The city's overall crime rate decreased by four percent from 2023, and the CSI saw an 11 percent decline. This reduction was primarily driven by a decrease in non-violent offenses, including breaking and entering, motor vehicle theft, and theft under $5,000. While these declines are encouraging, the city's homicide rate was also a point of concern, ranking as the third-highest in the country in 2023.

In response to these public safety challenges, the City of Chilliwack has implemented initiatives such as the Community Safety Plan and Project S.A.F.E. (Strategic Action for Focused Engagement). The latter is a collaboration between the RCMP, Bylaw Enforcement, and private security that focuses on addressing disruptive behaviors like open drug use and loitering in commercial areas.

The City of Chilliwack remains committed to public safety, with RCMP costs accounting for over 36 percent of its annual budget. These ongoing efforts demonstrate the city’s commitment to addressing complex urban issues and working to improve the community's sense of security.
